MacBook Won't Turn On? Adelaide Diagnostics & Fixes
A Mac that refuses to boot is scary, but it is usually fixable — and often without a logic board replacement. Try these steps first, then bring it to us if it is still dark.
Step 1: Is it actually off?
With the lid open, plug in the original charger and watch for:
- An LED on the charger
- The keyboard backlight briefly flashing
- Any fan noise
No signs of life at all? Move to Step 2.
Step 2: Try a different charger and cable
MagSafe and USB-C cables fail more often than the laptops they charge. Borrow a known-good charger before assuming the worst.
Step 3: Reset the SMC (Intel MacBooks only)
- Shut down
- Hold Shift + Control + Option + Power for 10 seconds
- Release everything, then press power normally
Step 4: Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) reset
- Shut down
- Hold the Power button for 10 seconds
- Wait 10 seconds, press Power normally
Step 5: Check the display
Shine a torch at the Apple logo with the lid open. Faint image visible? The Mac is running but the backlight is dead — that is a screen / backlight repair, not a dead Mac.
Common causes we see in the workshop
- Failed battery preventing power-on (yes, MacBooks need a working battery to boot even when plugged in)
- Liquid damage from months ago that is only now causing failure
- Keyboard short keeping the power line held down
- Failed SSD (older Intel MacBook Pros)
- Backlight fuse blown — easy fix
- Failed display cable (the 13" 2016/17 MacBook Pro "Flexgate" issue)
What our diagnostic includes
- Voltage and current draw test at the charge port
- Visual inspection of the logic board
- Component-level testing where needed
- Fixed-price quote before any work starts
